Yeah... It was already bad enough having to worry about getting killed, and now we have to worry about getting turned into murderers ourselves without getting a say in it? It's so messed up!
Lesser charges are a thing, this place is just stupid! Why did they even let him come back if they were just going to treat this the same as a real murder anyway?!

Clementine once told me that there was someone in her "game" who could save somebody from dying under certain circumstances, but it was unlikely to work.
If it's not that, then... perhaps an item or a special rule that came into play.
